[F]IFA
World Cup 2010
(mecz piłki nożnej,
voetbalwedstrijd, sokkerwedstryd, football/soccer match)
On May
29, 2010 a 6-a-side soccer (a.k.a. 'football') match was organized by
the Department of Dutch
and South
African
Studies, in which 6 brave IFA teachers took on a barbarian horde
of IFA students (reports vary on the exact number of the
horde,
but parties involved claim anything from 9 to 300).
Another
furious clash took place on the side of the pitch, where the staff
cheerleaders, outnumbered 7 to 1, did battle with a student
cheerleading team mercilessly led by Marcelina Hertmann.
The
brave staff, lovingly dubbed 'Team Marlboro' fought courageously in a
bloody first half which lasted anything from 30 minutes to half a day,
according to various sources. When finally they managed to dispatch the
horde, scores were level at 4-4.
During an uneasy ceasefire that
lasted all of ten minutes, some of the teachers were heard cursing the
foul brew that they had been served the night before, claiming sabotage
and foul play, which surely merits an official [F]IFA inquiry.
But
lo, the battle horns did sound, and as the courageous IFA staff
assembled in formation to charge once more into the breach, my friends,
it appeared that yet more, new barbarians had joined the maraudering
horde. It seemed the wall would indeed by filled with the English dead.
All could see that the strain of the first half had taken a heavy
toll, most particularly on the impartiality of referee Robert
de
Louw, who, in a half played almost exclusively in the staff's goalbox,
failed to award ANY penalties within easy shooting range of the
students' goal. As a result, after another brutal '30' minutes, the end
result was 10-5, in favour of the students.
(The staff wish to congratulate the
students on a well-deserved victory).
Man of the match was unanimously agreed
to be Chris Whyatt, goalkeeper of the staff team.
All
in all, we consider the event very successful and hope to be organizing
similar matches in the future. A big thank you to everyone who
participated!
