Department of English-Polish Comparative Linguistics
The Department conducts theoretical and comparative research in English and Polish syntax and morphology. It is also a center of work in generative linguistics. Comparative analyses, which often involve also other Germanic and Slavic languages, are conducted within, but not limited to, the Minimalist Program.
Recent projects include reconstruction, expletives, idioms (Jacek Witkoś), phase theory (Piotr Cegłowski, Przemysław Tajsner, Jacek Witkoś), Topicalization and object fronting in Polish (Piotr Cegłowski & Przemysław Tajsner), acquisition of grammar and corpus linguistics (Paweł Scheffler), the syntax of subjects (Katarzyna Miechowicz-Mathiasen, Jacek Witkoś), ellipsis (Urszula Juzwa), and cyclic linearization (Bartosz Wiland).
Courses taught by the faculty and graduate students of the Department include seminars on syntactic theory and foundations of Generative Grammar, as well as introductory courses to English syntax, and English-Polish contrastive linguistics.
