- PDFCreator: create PDF files from any application with a Print option.
- Firefox and Opera: web browsers. Strongly recommended over Internet Explorer.
- Nvu and KompoZer: free web page authoring programs.
- Praat: doing phonetics by computer.
- Audacity: a simple but powerful audio editor and recorder.
- Portable Apps: various useful software you can run on any Windows computer from a USB stick. Includes Portable OpenOffice.org and other programs. Hugely useful.
- Feedreader: a lightweight open-source aggregator that supports RSS and ATOM formats. It works under Windows 95 and later versions.
