The aim of this presentation is to present the immediate results of the
imposition of the Norman spelling system upon Late Old English / Early Middle
English, as visible in Layamon's Brut.
This text, dated to the second half of the thirteenth century, is a curious
mixture of contemporary and archaised linguistic material. In particular, the
spelling system of the text displays a progressive replacement of Anglo-Saxon
patters by those introduced by scribes from the continent. In particular, the questions of recessive, Anglo-Saxon
spellings as well as of paths of preservation and replacement will be
addressed.
