A conspiracy of Gliding Processes in Polish

Jerzy Rubach (University of Iowa / Warsaw University)

This paper provides an analysis of Polish glides from two perspectives: the perspective of the rule-based framework and the perspective of Optimality Theory. It is argued that the latter is superior to the former because it is able to capture the generalization that disparate processes conspire to achieve a single goal: provide onsets for what would otherwise have been onsetless syllables. The material is drawn from two types of sources: distributional generalizations and phonological alternations. The processes under analysis include: Prevocalic Gliding, Postvocalic Gliding, leftward Glide Insertion, and rightward Glide Insertion.
