/^t/Down's syndrome is known to be caused by the presence of an extra chromosome, a fault of cell division, but the question "Why does it happen" has not yet been answered. Parents of such a baby have to face many problems, the most serious of them is the decision about keeping the child at home or giving it away. The problem concerns all kinds of retardation, but Down's syndrome may serve here as a good example. In making up such a decision it is, of course, necessary to react to specific cases, but generally, placing retarded children in special institutions is better for both the family and a child itself. Widely understood financial problems, the necessity of taking into consideration other members of the family and the good of the retarded child - these are the most important reasons why parents should decide not to keep the child at home.
