/^t/The basic reason why gay couples should not have the right to adopt children is that in most of the countries they cannot legally get married. So, the first thing to do would be to pass a law allowing such couples to legalize their relationship. However, it is very unlikely to happen because of social unacceptance towards homosexuality. Thus, gay couples could only adopt children without being married. Such an informal family would be deprived of certain benefits of a traditional family with married parents. They could not profit from social protection, for example they could not receive a child benefit. Also, they do not get a holiday or a travel discount. This is particularly important in case of less wealthy gay couples when lack of social protection can make their financial situation very difficult.
