Considering these two stories I try to answer the question if the heroes of the two novels were really the victims of American Dream as it is stated. On the one hand, it might be true, especially in the case of Martin Eden. When he finally reached his ideal position in the society, it only brought him disappointment and lack of understanding with other people. Instead of happiness, Martin experienced the worst thing that could happen to a human - a complete antipathy and ill-disposition towards life. Jay Gatsby also did not match the bourgeoisie Buchanans who were careless and insensitive. He was just a parvenu and lonely till the end when none of his rich acquaintances was willing to come to his funeral.
