ABSTRACT

In this talk the author of the Longman Pronunciation Dictionary presents the findings of research done for the second edition. Nearly 2,000 speakers of British English were asked which variant they preferred for a hundred words of uncertain pronunciation. Schedule, garage, ogle, forehead, falcon, mischievous -- these and many other words are changing. Plus: a brief report on an earlier survey dealing with American English preferences.
